Athol Springs Residents: Physical Therapy a Short Drive North

Athol Springs sits on Route 5, about 17 minutes from our Buffalo clinic, with two express bus routes at its Park & Ride.

Athol Springs is a Lake Shore Road community, and Route 5 does nearly all the work of getting you to Lake Erie Physical Therapy. Head north on Lake Shore Road, stay with Route 5 as it becomes the Hamburg Turnpike, cross the Skyway and follow Franklin Street up to Virginia Street in Buffalo. At about 17 minutes with clear roads, physical therapy for Athol Springs, NY residents can fit into an ordinary week, even when a plan of care starts with a few visits a week.

Its own ZIP code, with a Hamburg address

Athol Springs is a hamlet in the Town of Hamburg rather than a village, so the town and its special districts handle services such as police, highways and recreation. The hamlet has its own post office ZIP, 14010, yet street addresses here, including St. Francis High School’s and the Park & Ride’s, read Hamburg, 14075. Public-school families are in the Frontier Central School District. Athol Springs ran its own small district until 1951, when it and seven others along the lakeshore merged to form Frontier.

Red Raiders on the lake, Falcons up the road

St. Francis High School has been on Lake Shore Road since the 1920s, on a campus the school describes as sitting on the shores of Lake Erie. It’s a Catholic college-prep school for young men, and its Red Raiders field 29 teams in 15 sports, with a lighted turf football stadium, an all-weather track and practice fields on campus. Public-school students from the hamlet head inland to Frontier High School, where Evan Johnston, PTA, from our clinic helps coach varsity wrestling.

Contact sports are hard on knees and shoulders, and that doesn’t end at graduation for the adults who still play, coach or officiate. Our sports injuries page explains how rehab builds back to full speed. Students are welcome too: a Red Raider or a Falcon can come in for an evaluation, and we plan the visits around the season.

The Town Park, its beach and the boat launch

The Town of Hamburg’s Town Park sits on the lake at 4420 Lake Shore Road. It has a lifeguarded beach from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, a boat launch and a fitness center that stays open all year, with beach parking and launch access limited to town residents who hold the right pass or permit. The town has closed the 2026 boating season and pulled the docks, but anyone who launches a boat knows the routine: cranking a winch, hauling gear and stepping between a dock and a moving deck. Those motions can strain a shoulder or back; see how we approach shoulder pain.

Leaving the car at the Athol Springs Park & Ride

NFTA’s Athol Springs Park & Ride, at 4066 Lake Shore Road, is served by Route 74 Hamburg Express and Route 76 Lakeshore Express. Both make weekday morning runs to downtown Buffalo and bring riders back in the late afternoon. From downtown, Metro Rail heads up Main Street to the Allen/Medical Campus station, a short walk from Virginia Street. The arrangement makes the most sense if you already commute downtown or to the Medical Campus and can fit a visit around the bus times, and the clinic’s 7 AM weekday starts (Tuesday to Friday) help.

One-on-one physical therapy for Athol Springs, NY, 17 minutes up the lake

The physical therapists who own the clinic handle evaluations one-on-one: Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, certified by the McKenzie Institute, and Dr. Ryan Mitchell, PT, DPT. Both build care around the McKenzie Method, which watches how your pain changes as you repeat specific movements and leans on exercises you can do at home. If your orthopedic surgeon practices on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, our clinic is on its doorstep, so a rehab visit and a follow-up appointment can share a trip.

Which buses stop at the Athol Springs Park & Ride?

NFTA Routes 74 Hamburg Express and 76 Lakeshore Express. Both make weekday rush-hour trips between the lot on Lake Shore Road and downtown Buffalo, where Metro Rail runs north on Main Street to the Allen/Medical Campus station near our clinic.

Is Route 5 the quickest way from Athol Springs to the clinic?

Usually, yes. With light traffic it's about 9.7 miles and 17 minutes, nearly all of it on Route 5: Lake Shore Road, the Hamburg Turnpike and the Skyway, with Franklin Street carrying you the last stretch to Virginia Street. Weekday rush hour can add a fair amount to that.

Can an Athol Springs resident book without a doctor's referral?

For most plans, yes. New York's direct access provision gives you up to 30 days or 10 visits with a licensed physical therapist, whichever ends sooner, before a referral is needed, though a few insurers still insist on one before paying. Two exceptions: No-Fault claims after a car accident and Workers' Compensation cases both require a referral, so call (716) 332-4838 and we'll check your plan.
