East Amherst Physical Therapy, Planned Around Transit Road

East Amherst spans two towns, three high school zones and one ZIP. Here's how to fit physical therapy in Buffalo around all of it.

Where does East Amherst stop and Clarence start? Not at Transit Road. The hamlet runs across it, and its 14051 ZIP code takes in streets in both towns. East Amherst also has its own postal name, its own Town of Amherst parks and four Williamsville school buildings with East Amherst addresses. Lake Erie Physical Therapy sees patients only at its Virginia Street clinic in Buffalo, so physical therapy from East Amherst, NY starts with a drive: Transit Road south to Genesee Street, then the Kensington Expressway, about 25 minutes with light traffic.

Three high schools, two districts, one ZIP

School lines here follow the street, not the postmark. In the Williamsville district’s street directory, East Amherst splits between two high schools. Many streets feed Williamsville North, mostly through Dodge Elementary and Casey Middle; others feed Williamsville East on Paradise Road, through Maple East or Country Parkway Elementary and Transit Middle. East of Transit, parts of streets such as Stahley Road and Westphalinger Road appear on the Clarence Central School District’s list instead, which means Clarence High School. House numbers can matter, so check both directories if you live near a line.

For athletes at any of the three, sports rehab starts with an evaluation and a plan matched to the injury. A torn ACL gets its own track, ACL rehab, and the return to play is decided by testing rather than the calendar. Once therapy ends, Keep It Going, our out-of-pocket exercise program, is available for pre-season conditioning too; joining takes a prescription from your physician, medical clearance and a signed waiver.

Some injuries belong with a physician before they come to us: a deformed-looking bone or joint, an ankle or knee you can’t stand on, or a blow to the head followed by headache, dizziness or confusion. Physical therapy is no substitute for that diagnosis.

Paradise Park courts and the Dann Lake boardwalk

The Town of Amherst’s Paradise Park, on the same road as Williamsville East, has a pickleball court, tennis courts, and soccer and softball fields. Dann Lake Park, off Dann Road, adds a boardwalk, shore fishing and an accessible kayak launch, and Windsor Woods, off Covent Garden Lane, protects a stand of old-growth forest.

Racket and paddle sports are hard on elbows and shoulders when playing time jumps. If the outside of your elbow aches when you grip a paddle, a racket or a gallon of milk, read about tennis elbow. If a shoulder pinches on overheads or after an afternoon of kayaking, we look at how the trunk, shoulder blade and arm share the work.

An East Amherst, NY schedule with room for physical therapy

Most plans of care front-load the visits, often two or three weekly at first, so a 25-minute drive each way deserves some planning:

  • Use the early slots. Book the 7 AM openings, Tuesday through Friday, so therapy comes ahead of the workday rather than at the end of a long one.
  • Keep a standing time. The same day and hour each week is easier to protect from Transit Road traffic and practice schedules.
  • Check in between visits. Log home sessions and symptoms through Medbridge GO, the app behind our remote therapeutic monitoring program, and your therapist sees how the week went before your next visit.
  • Lean on self-treatment. Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT practices the McKenzie Method with the Institute’s certification, and the method is designed so you can manage symptoms with your own exercises; for some people that trims the number of trips down Transit.

Transit, Genesee and the 33, or the bus

By car, take Transit Road south past the Eastern Hills Mall to Genesee Street, head west on Genesee and stay with Route 33 as it becomes the Kensington Expressway. That’s roughly 16 road miles, and Transit’s traffic lights and the 33 both add time at rush hour.

Bus options are fewer out here. NFTA Metro’s Route 49, which carries the East Amherst name, runs between the Eastern Hills Mall and University Station by way of Transit Road, Maple Road, Hopkins Road, Sheridan Drive, Bailey Avenue and Main Street; at University Station, Metro Rail continues to Allen/Medical Campus, the station to use for our clinic. The Route 66 Williamsville Express begins its inbound trips where Millersport Highway meets Transit Road and heads downtown along Main Street and Route 33. If your street is deeper into the Town of Clarence, our Clarence page may fit better.

Pick the weekday that fits your Transit Road commute, call (716) 332-4838 to claim it, or start with the request form; we’ll try to hold that slot for the weeks ahead.

Call (716) 332-4838
How long does it take to drive from East Amherst to your clinic?

About 25 minutes without traffic, roughly 16 road miles: Transit Road south to Genesee Street, then Route 33 and the Kensington Expressway. Rush hour adds time on both, which makes a 7 AM start, offered Tuesday through Friday, worth considering.

Does Route 49 East Amherst connect to the Metro Rail?

Yes. Route 49 runs along Transit and Maple roads, then Hopkins Road, Sheridan Drive, Bailey Avenue and Main Street to University Station, the northern end of the Metro Rail line. Ride the train toward downtown to Allen/Medical Campus, near our clinic, and check NFTA Metro's timetables before you go.

Do you work with high school athletes from Williamsville East, Williamsville North and Clarence?

Yes. We rehab sprains, overuse injuries and knees after ACL surgery, and return to play depends on test results, not on how many weeks have passed. A possible fracture, dislocation or concussion needs a physician's evaluation before therapy.

Will my insurance cover physical therapy in Buffalo if I live in East Amherst?

Your plan decides coverage; your ZIP code doesn't. We accept many plans, including Independent Health, Univera, the Empire Plan and Medicare, but confirm yours with us before the first visit. Expect your copay or deductible to be collected at each visit.
