Beyond the Village Line: Physical Therapy for the Town of Tonawanda

Outside Kenmore but in the town? Delaware Avenue or Route 11 leads to our Buffalo clinic for rehab after surgery, work injuries and sport.

Between the Niagara River and the Amherst line, the Town of Tonawanda takes in Brighton, Green Acres, Kenilworth, Parkview, Sheridan Parkside and the other neighborhoods wrapped around the Village of Kenmore, a pairing people often shorten to Ken-Ton. Here we cover physical therapy for Town of Tonawanda, NY residents who live outside the village; Kenmore has its own page. Lake Erie Physical Therapy is not in the town. We see every patient at one address, 531 Virginia Street in Buffalo. From much of the town, the trip heads straight south.

From Sheridan and Colvin, Delaware does the work

Starting near Sheridan Drive and Colvin Boulevard, the usual drive is a short hop on Brighton Road over to Delaware Avenue, then more than six miles due south through Kenmore and the north side of Buffalo to within a few blocks of Virginia Street. Weekday commuter traffic on Delaware can slow those miles, so leave yourself some margin when you schedule.

Two NFTA Metro routes cover the same ground. Route 11 Colvin starts at the Tonawanda Centre of Industry, runs down Colvin past Sheridan Drive and Kenmore Avenue, then follows Delaware Avenue to downtown. Route 25 Delaware stops at Delaware and Orchard on its way down from the Tonawandas. Either way, the stop you want is Virginia Street.

Two golf courses, a rail trail and a creekside park

The town runs two 18-hole golf courses, Sheridan Park, in play since the 1930s, and Brighton Park, opened in 1961, and both can be walked. Eighteen holes on foot means miles of walking plus a long series of swings through the low back, hips and lead shoulder. If pain is cutting your rounds short, an evaluation can show which movements to change and which to strengthen.

The town’s 3.9-mile Rails to Trails path runs on a former railroad bed through the Town and the City of Tonawanda, and Erie County’s Ellicott Creek Park adds paved paths along the creek, a sled hill, and room for snowshoeing and ungroomed cross-country skiing in winter. A flat, paved route like the rail trail makes a natural target during knee replacement rehab: the end of your street first, then longer stretches, at a pace you and your physical therapist set within your surgeon’s guidelines.

When the trail is buried in snow, the town’s Aquatic & Fitness Center on Pool Plaza keeps a 50-meter pool, a gym and group classes going indoors. If a shoulder pinches on every freestyle stroke, or your back complains for days after a gym session, an evaluation beats waiting it out.

Physical therapy for Town of Tonawanda, NY residents after surgery

If the surgeon who operated on you has an office at the Medical Campus, our Virginia Street clinic is a short walk away. Booking a therapy session right after a follow-up visit is simple, and so is stopping in on the way from a shift on the campus. Our post-surgical rehab sticks to the protocol your surgeon sets, starting from a one-on-one evaluation, then moving through motion, strength and a return to your normal routine.

The same holds after a hip replacement or a rotator cuff repair: your surgeon writes the protocol, and the day-to-day progress happens in our clinic and in your home exercise program. None of this stands in for your surgeon’s own follow-up visits. Call the surgeon’s office promptly about increasing redness, swelling or drainage at the incision, a fever, or new pain and swelling in your calf.

Hurt on the job in the Town of Tonawanda

The town describes itself as an industrial and commercial community as well as a residential one, and Route 11’s northern end is the Tonawanda Centre of Industry. If you were injured at work, New York’s rules shape how care begins. Workers’ Compensation care starts with a referral from whoever is treating your injury, whether that is a physician, a podiatrist, a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant, and the Workers’ Compensation Board has to authorize the physical therapist. Read how Workers’ Compensation cases work at Lake Erie PT before your first appointment.

Ken-Ton, Sweet Home and the town’s turf and ice

Most of the town sends its students to Ken-Ton, the same district as the village. A smaller section falls within the Sweet Home Central School District, which covers parts of Amherst and Tonawanda from one high school, Sweet Home High School. Away from school fields, the town’s Lincoln Park Athletic Complex on Decatur Road has an indoor turf field with pull-out hitting and pitching lanes, and the Paddock Chevrolet Ice Arena on Brompton Road runs public skating and skate-and-shoot sessions.

Cutting, landing and contact on turf and ice put the knee’s ligaments under strain. If a ligament tear has led to surgery, ACL rehab moves from protecting the new graft toward strength, hopping and change-of-direction work before a return to sport, with your surgeon making the final call.

From Sheridan Parkside to Green Acres, booking is a phone call, (716) 332-4838, or a quick online request. If a surgeon’s protocol or a Workers’ Compensation claim is part of the picture, mention it so we can tell you what paperwork to bring.

Common questions

Not sure about a referral, your coverage or your first visit? Call us and we will walk you through it.

Call (716) 332-4838
Is there a bus from the Colvin Boulevard area to Lake Erie Physical Therapy?

Yes. NFTA Metro's Route 11 Colvin heads down Colvin and then rides Delaware Avenue toward downtown, and the Virginia Street stop leaves you a short walk from the clinic.

Can I walk the Tonawanda Rails to Trails again after a knee replacement?

It is a sensible goal to plan toward. Your surgeon sets the early limits, and your physical therapist builds walking distance, strength and balance in steps from there. How far and how fast depends on the operation, your overall health and your knee's response, so no one can promise a timeline.

I was hurt at work in the Town of Tonawanda. Can I come straight to physical therapy?

Not if it is a Workers' Compensation case. Those claims need a referral from the clinician treating your injury, and your care has to come from a physical therapist the Workers' Compensation Board has authorized. Call us with your claim information and we will walk you through the next steps.

Can physical therapy help me get back to golf at Sheridan Park or Brighton Park?

It often can, although no one can promise a result. We begin by testing which movements and positions settle or stir up your back or shoulder, then rebuild the strength and rotation a round asks for, with a gradual return to hitting balls and walking the course.
