The Town of Sheldon’s website introduces it as “A Right to Farm Community,” and a lot of the work that comes with that title is hard on backs, shoulders and knees. For physical therapy, Sheldon, NY residents can come to Lake Erie Physical Therapy on Virginia Street in Buffalo, about 34 road miles and 51 minutes from the center of town in light traffic. This page covers the whole town: Varysburg, Sheldon Center, Dutch Hollow, Persons Corners and the farm roads between them. Strykersville, in the southwest corner, has a page of its own.
Persons Corners to the Aurora Expressway
From Sheldon Center, Route 77 runs north to Big Tree Road (US 20A) at Persons Corners. Head west on 20A across the Erie County line to Wales Center, where Route 78 joins, and keep going to the Aurora Expressway (Route 400) at the east edge of East Aurora. The 400 ends at the Thruway, and the 190 takes you to Elm Street for the last stretch. If you live in Varysburg, you’re on 20A from the start. Weekday rush hour slows the city end of the trip, and icy hills slow the country end.
Attica, Holland or Pioneer, depending on your road
Most of Sheldon, from Varysburg to Sheldon Center and Dutch Hollow, falls within the Attica Central School District, which lists Sheldon among the towns it serves. Around Strykersville the line shifts to the Holland Central School District, and a band on the south side, east of Strykersville, belongs to the Pioneer Central School District. So neighbors a few miles apart can finish high school in Attica, Holland or Yorkshire. Mailing addresses split too: Strykersville (14145) on the west side, Varysburg (14167) on the east and North Java (14113) in the southeast corner.
Byrncliff’s hills, fairways and ski trails
Byrncliff Resort in Varysburg has a public 18-hole, par 72 course with hills and creeks, about 20 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails in winter, and a pool, and the town’s youth program holds swim lessons there. A hilly round means walking slopes and repeating the same rotation over and over; a winter on skis means long, repetitive strides through the hips and knees. When a swing starts to pinch your low back, or a knee complains on the climbs, sports physical therapy works on the movement that provokes it, and our knee pain page explains common causes and what treatment involves.
Physical therapy for Sheldon, NY farm work
Stacking bales, climbing on and off equipment, setting fence posts and long days bent over in a barn all load the same places: the low back, the shoulders and the knees. When back pain starts running down a leg, a disc may be involved; our page on herniated discs explains what that means. The exam uses repeated movements to find the direction that eases your symptoms. Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, earned the McKenzie Institute’s credential in this method, while Dr. Ryan Mitchell, PT, DPT, makes it his primary approach, so you leave the first visit with exercises you can do at home or on a break. Both are owners, and both work one-on-one.
Keeping a Sheldon home program on track between visits
Early in a plan of care, two or three visits a week is common, and at 51 minutes each way that adds up. Remote therapeutic monitoring eases it: you record each home session in the Medbridge GO app, flag pain or exercises that feel too easy, and your therapist adjusts the program without waiting for your next appointment. On clinic days, 7 AM openings Tuesday through Friday let you get a visit in before most of the day’s work. If your surgeon practices on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the clinic is close by, so a post-op check and a therapy visit can sometimes share one trip.
Farm weeks don’t bend much, so call (716) 332-4838 once you know yours, or send an appointment request, and we’ll talk through times that work from Sheldon.
