Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy for the City of Tonawanda

Canal runners, Timberwolves athletes and weekday commuters: sports and orthopedic physical therapy in Buffalo for the City of Tonawanda.

The City of Tonawanda is its own place, not a corner of the town that shares its name. It has a city hall on Niagara Street, its own school district and about four square miles at the northern edge of Erie County, on the Niagara River and across Tonawanda Creek and the Erie Canal from North Tonawanda. Looking for physical therapists within reach of Tonawanda, NY? Lake Erie Physical Therapy is about 12 road miles south, at 531 Virginia Street in Buffalo. That is the only place we treat patients; there is no Tonawanda branch.

Canal path, river path, rail trail

The city’s own trail page points to three routes near its downtown transit and bike hub by Gateway Harbor: the Erie Canalway Trail, the Tonawanda Rails to Trails and the Two Mile Creek greenway. The hub has a bike service station, and Gateway Harbor itself is a public park along the canal. On the river side, Erie County’s Isle View Park stretches along the Niagara with a paved section of the Riverwalk, and a footbridge links it to the city’s Niawanda Park.

Miles on paths like these bring their own overuse problems: a knee that aches on the way back, a sore hip, a heel that complains when you first stand up in the morning. We’ll ask about your mileage and routes, check how your hips, knees and feet handle load, and set a plan that keeps you on the trail when that’s safe and eases you back when it isn’t. Read more about hip pain. Dr. Ryan Mitchell, PT, DPT, a co-owner, was a collegiate cross country runner at Daemen, which makes talk of pacing and weekly mileage familiar territory.

Sports PT for Tonawanda’s Timberwolves and weekend athletes

The Tonawanda City School District’s board approved the Timberwolves as the district’s new mascot in January 2024, keeping the traditional maroon and white. Whether you play for Tonawanda High School or on a weekend team, the first job in sports physical therapy is working out what is hurt and how much load it can take right now; strength, landing, cutting or throwing then come back in stages. Before a full return, testing compares the injured side with the healthy one and checks hops, landings and quick changes of direction.

When an injury or surgery rules out heavy lifting for a while, blood flow restriction training pairs light weights with a cuff that limits blood flow, so the muscle is challenged without a heavy load. Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, a co-owner, has Level 1 certification in BFR, and everyone is screened before the cuff goes on. A blow to the head with concussion symptoms, or an injury that leaves a bone or joint looking out of place, belongs in a physician’s office first.

Main Street, Military Road, Sheridan, then the 190

From downtown Tonawanda, the drive follows Main Street south as it becomes Military Road, turns west on Sheridan Drive and picks up the Niagara Thruway (I-190) into Buffalo. The Thruway carries most of the trip, so check for backups on the 190 before you leave at commuting time.

Twenty-odd minutes in the car each way, added to a desk job, can leave a low back stiff by Friday. If that stiffness turns into pain that travels down a leg, read about sciatica; an evaluation can show which positions calm it and which make it worse.

Without a car, NFTA Metro’s Route 25 Delaware stops at the Main and Niagara transit center, which has park-and-ride parking, and runs down Delaware Avenue into Buffalo; hop off at Virginia Street and walk the rest. On weekdays, Route 61 Tonawanda Express also connects Main and Niagara with downtown Buffalo during the morning and evening commute.

Physical therapists for Tonawanda, NY: what the first visit covers

Every plan of care opens with an unhurried one-on-one evaluation with one of the clinic’s two owners; both are Doctors of Physical Therapy. Dress so the sore area is easy to see and move; shorts work well for a knee or hip. Education is part of each visit, with joint models and pictures to explain what is going on, and you leave with a personalized home exercise program so progress continues between trips down the 190. When it helps, sessions also include hands-on work on stiff joints and tissues, plus exercises that build strength and control.

Because the city sits about 12 road miles out, we plan visits with the drive in mind: appointments tend to be closer together early on, then spread out as your home program takes over. Early risers can book from 7 AM on Tuesdays through Fridays and still carry on to work downtown.

Phone (716) 332-4838 or fill in the online request form, and mention your sport and season dates so we can plan around them. For most plans, starting here takes no referral at all, thanks to New York’s direct access rules; car accident and Workers’ Compensation cases are the exceptions.

Call (716) 332-4838
Are the City of Tonawanda and the Town of Tonawanda the same place?

No. The City has its own government on Niagara Street and its own school district, and the Town of Tonawanda, which includes the Village of Kenmore, lies to its south. The town has its own page, and both are served from our one clinic in Buffalo.

Can I ride a bus from Main and Niagara to the clinic?

Yes. Route 25 Delaware stops at the Main and Niagara transit center and runs down Delaware Avenue into Buffalo; ride it to Virginia Street. On weekdays, Route 61 Tonawanda Express also makes a few rush-hour trips between Main and Niagara and downtown.

Do you treat Tonawanda High School athletes?

Yes. We see high school athletes for sports injuries and for rehab after surgery, and we use strength and movement testing to guide the return to practice. A concussion or other head injury needs a physician's evaluation first.

What is the usual driving route from the City of Tonawanda to Virginia Street?

Head south on Main Street, which becomes Military Road, then go west on Sheridan Drive to the I-190 and take the Thruway into Buffalo. It is about 12 road miles, most of them on the Thruway.
