Sixty minutes. That’s the drive from the middle of the Town of Sardinia to our clinic on Virginia Street without traffic, and winter roads or rush hour can stretch it. We’d rather say that plainly. Anyone weighing physical therapy for Sardinia, NY at a Buffalo clinic deserves the real picture, so here it is, along with ways to get more out of every trip.
Sardinia, Chaffee and Protection
The town describes itself as about 50 square miles in the southeast corner of Erie County, with three small population centers: the hamlets of Sardinia, Protection and Chaffee. Hilltops rise in the west and farmland rolls across the east. Chaffee sits on Route 16 near the east town line, the hamlet of Sardinia is on Route 39 in the south part of town, and Cattaraugus Creek forms the southern border. Sardinia (14134) and Chaffee (14030) have their own ZIP codes, though some addresses carry a Holland, Springville, East Concord or Glenwood ZIP.
Pioneer, Holland Central or S-GI
Three school districts divide the town. Pioneer Central, which counts Sardinia among the 12 towns and villages it serves, covers a large share of it, Chaffee included, and Pioneer High School is on County Line Road in Yorkshire. Other parts of Sardinia belong to Holland Central or Springville-Griffith Institute. For a student athlete, ask about late-afternoon times: the clinic stays open to 6:30 PM from Monday to Thursday.
Route 16 north, through Holland, onto the 400
Most of the drive is one road. From Chaffee, Route 16 heads north through the hamlet of Holland and joins the Aurora Expressway (Route 400). Starting in the hamlet of Sardinia or on the west side of town, take Route 39 or Genesee Road over to Route 16 first. Past the end of the 400, a brief run on the Thruway connects to the 190 and downtown Buffalo.
Farm work and hill country
Farm chores mean hauling, stooping and long hours on your feet, and they can wear on backs, shoulders and knees. An evaluation built on the McKenzie Method looks for the movements and positions that ease your symptoms, then teaches you to use them on your own. Dr. Ryan Mitchell, PT, DPT practices this way, as does Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, whose Cert. MDT is the McKenzie Institute’s credential. From Sardinia, that self-treatment emphasis matters more than usual, because your home program carries much of the load between visits. For back problems specifically, see back pain and spine care.
After a fall from a ladder, a wagon or farm equipment, have a physician rule out a fracture before you start therapy.
Making physical therapy from Sardinia, NY practical
Many plans of care open with two or three visits a week. From Sardinia, that can mean four to six hours a week behind the wheel at first, so plan it deliberately:
- Ask about tapering at your evaluation. Know roughly when visits might drop to once a week.
- Use remote monitoring. With remote therapeutic monitoring, your therapist watches how your home sessions go through Medbridge GO and changes them as needed, with a phone check-in every month.
- Do the paperwork at home. Ask us to email the digital intake link and finish your forms before the first visit, so you don’t need to arrive 30 minutes early. The new patient page lists what to bring.
- Watch the weather. If the roads are bad, call to reschedule and keep doing your home program.
