Thirty-six square miles and roughly 14,000 people make up the Town of Aurora, and the village of East Aurora is only one piece of it. The town also takes in the hamlets of Jewettville, Griffins Mills and West Falls, part of South Wales, and the open country and parkland in between. This page is about physical therapy Aurora, NY residents can plan from anywhere in the town. The village and West Falls each have a page of their own: see East Aurora and West Falls.
Griffins Mills, Jewettville, Blakeley and Billington Heights
Griffins Mills sits in the southwest part of town on the West Branch of Cazenovia Creek, and the town’s own history credits the hamlet with a major role on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. Jewettville sits on Route 240 in the southwest corner, Blakeley is a hamlet in the southeast, and Billington Heights, a census-designated place shared with Elma, borders the village on its north side.
Horses run through the town’s story, too. In the late 1800s Aurora was known as the horse-racing capital of the world, thanks to the Hamlin and Jewett farms, and the Jewett property had a mile-long indoor track off Grover Road. Riders today use Knox Farm’s trails by permit. If a fall from a horse leaves you with neck pain, numbness or weakness, a physician needs to evaluate it before any therapy starts.
Knox Farm, Majors Park and Emery Park through the year
Knox Farm State Park, the former country estate of Buffalo’s Knox family at 437 Buffalo Road, covers 633 acres at the village’s edge. Its trails carry hikers in summer and cross-country skiers and snowshoers in winter, bikes are allowed in designated areas, and the fenced dog park takes up about six acres. The town’s recreation department posts trail maps for Majors Park on Olean Road, and its Aurora Community Pool park on South Street adds ball diamonds, a T-ball complex, and tennis and pickleball courts.
Down in South Wales, Erie County’s Emery Park spreads across roughly 457 acres along Cazenovia Creek, with a mile-long nature trail, an 18-hole disc golf course and six tennis courts. In winter a Magic Carpet lift serves downhill skiing and snowboarding when conditions allow, and the trails open to cross-country skis and snowshoes.
Trail miles are where an ankle sprain tends to happen, ski days put knees to the test, and racquet sports have a way of finding the outside of the elbow. We treat all three, with the same aim each time: getting you back out on the trail, the slope or the court.
East Aurora schools, with exceptions at the edges
The East Aurora Union Free School District describes itself as serving the Town of Aurora’s roughly 14,000 residents through three buildings: Parkdale Elementary, the middle school on Main Street, and East Aurora High School on Center Street. The edges are less tidy. The Iroquois and Orchard Park districts each count part of Aurora in their territory, and federal school district maps put a corner near South Wales in the Holland Central School District. Student athletes from all four districts play seasons that bring sprains, strains and overuse injuries, and those are part of our everyday sports rehab work.
Vans, Medicare and physical therapy Aurora, NY seniors can use
The Town of Aurora Senior Center at 101 King Street runs activities for anyone over 55, and it points older adults who no longer drive to two ride services. Erie County’s Going Places van serves Aurora and Elma residents over 60, Tuesday through Friday, and gives medical trips priority. Rural Transit Service, a volunteer-driven nonprofit, also lists physical therapy among the trips it provides. Ask either one whether a ride into Buffalo fits their schedule before you set up a series of visits.
On the insurance side, with most plans, including Original Medicare, you can start physical therapy without a referral, and your physician then certifies the plan of care. Medicare Advantage plans can require prior authorization. Our Medicare page explains the rules. If a hip or knee replacement is on your calendar, plan for a stretch of regular visits once you are home from surgery.
From South Wales to Virginia Street on the 400
The Aurora Expressway (NY 400) begins at South Wales and runs north through Aurora, so for most addresses in town the drive into Buffalo looks the same: the 400 to the Thruway, the 190 into the city, and the Elm Street exit. From the middle of town that comes to about 36 minutes and 22 road miles with light traffic, and more at rush hour. Homes in the southwest corner may do better on Route 240 north to the 219, which the West Falls page lays out.
Many plans of care open with visits two or three times a week, so the drive deserves a plan. Our 7 AM start Tuesday through Friday lets a session come before a workday in the city. McKenzie-based care, which both owners practice, teaches you exercises to manage symptoms on your own, and that can mean fewer visits. Remote therapeutic monitoring in the Medbridge GO app keeps your therapist up to date on your home program between sessions.
From Billington Heights to South Wales, the first step is the same: call (716) 332-4838 or send an appointment request, and mention the days you already head toward Buffalo.
