Buffalo Physical Therapy for Gowanda, on Both Sides of the Creek

About an hour each way from Gowanda: how to decide whether physical therapy in Buffalo fits your recovery, and how to plan it if it does.

An hour is a long drive for a physical therapy appointment, and we’d rather say so up front. Lake Erie Physical Therapy is at 531 Virginia Street in Buffalo, about an hour and 37 road miles from the village when traffic cooperates. If a search for Gowanda physical therapy led you here, the useful questions are whether the trip fits your recovery and how to keep it from taking over your week. Here’s our honest take on both.

Planning Gowanda physical therapy around a 37-mile drive

Physical therapy often begins with two or three sessions a week. From Gowanda, that can mean four to six hours of driving in a week, so the plan has to be worth the miles. That’s most likely when one of these applies:

  • Your surgery was on the Medical Campus. The clinic sits between Allentown and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, so a therapy visit can share a day with a surgeon’s follow-up. Post-surgical rehab here follows your surgeon’s protocol. Until you’re cleared to drive, line up a ride for each visit.
  • You want a McKenzie-based look at back or neck pain. Dr. Will Tso, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, earned the McKenzie Institute’s certification, and Dr. Ryan Mitchell, PT, DPT, practices primarily with the same method. Because it teaches you to treat yourself, it can mean fewer visits overall.
  • You’d rather drive less and check in more. Remote therapeutic monitoring lets your therapist keep an eye on your home program between visits, using what you record in the Medbridge GO app.

Ask about tapering at your evaluation, and fill out your intake forms through the emailed link so you don’t have to arrive 30 minutes early.

Bridging two counties

The village’s tagline, Bridging Two Counties, is literal. Cattaraugus Creek runs through Gowanda and forms the county line: the north side is in Erie County and the Town of Collins, the south side in Cattaraugus County and the Town of Persia. Both sides share ZIP 14070 and the village offices on East Main Street. Gowanda Central School District serves the community, with its elementary school on Aldrich Street and its middle and high schools on Prospect Street.

If you live in the Town of Collins outside the village, our Collins page covers Route 75 and the rest of the town.

Route 438 or Route 62

Our mapped route leaves on Buffalo Street and picks up Route 438, which follows the north bank of Cattaraugus Creek as Four Mile Level Road through the Cattaraugus Territory. Brant Reservation Road and Angola-Brant Road take you north to Route 20, and Route 20 runs northeast to Camp Road in Hamburg. From there, Camp Road and St. Francis Drive lead to Route 5 and the Skyway. Route 62 north through Collins and North Collins to Hamburg is the other familiar way. Whichever you pick, leave extra time at rush hour, and check road conditions before a winter drive.

Below the Zoar Valley cliffs

The village says its name means a valley among the hills, or under the cliffs, a reference to its spot below the Zoar Valley gorge. Upstream lies the 2,978-acre Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area and Unique Area, a landscape of gorge, cliffs and forest, and DEC says safe access to the gorge and creek is only from the Forty Road parking lot. Trails like these mean steep descents and climbs, which load the knees and hips far more than a walk on flat ground. If your knees are what’s holding you back, our page on knee pain explains how we work on them.

Panther pride, three seasons a year

Gowanda athletes compete across three seasons: football (a combined team with Pine Valley, hosted in Gowanda), boys and girls soccer (hosted by Pine Valley), cross country and volleyball in the fall; wrestling, basketball and bowling in the winter; lacrosse, track and field, baseball and softball in the spring, plus a trap team. Contact, cutting and throwing each bring their own injuries, from sprained knees and ankles to sore shoulders. Our approach to sports injuries starts with what’s hurt and ends with testing before a return to play.

Does it matter whether I live on the Erie County or Cattaraugus County side of Gowanda?

Not for getting started. New York's direct access rule is statewide, so with most plans you can begin physical therapy without a referral on either side of Cattaraugus Creek, within the limit of 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first. Your insurance plan is what matters, so call us with your card and we'll check what it requires.

Is there a faster way to Buffalo from Gowanda than Route 62?

In our route mapping, the quicker trip without traffic follows Route 438 along Cattaraugus Creek, heads north to Route 20 and takes Camp Road and Route 5 into the city, about an hour in all. Route 62 north through Collins and North Collins is the other familiar choice. Traffic, weather and where you start can change which one is faster on a given day.

Can I schedule therapy on the same day as a surgeon visit on the Medical Campus?

We're glad to try. The clinic is on Virginia Street, between Allentown and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, so pairing a therapy visit with a follow-up there can save you a separate trip from Gowanda. Share your follow-up dates when you book.
